The Pike and Eure is a very old educational charity established by the founders Timothy Pike in 1728 and Ralph Eure in 1627 to cover both the villages of Heighington and Washingborough. Its aim was to help youngsters, leaving school to start apprenticeships, to pay for tools and other equipment or further their education. Also, alongside it is the George Walker Sports Foundation which was started in 1997 from the donations on the death of George Walker by his family as George was a Trustee. The Charity is run by 10 Trustees, 5 from each village who meet at least twice a year.
Over several years just prior to 2023 the Trustees through a solicitor drew up a new Trust Deed which came into force from 1.1.2023 as the old one of 1954 was very outdated. The capital started initially by money and land left by Messers Pike and Eure, then the sale of the land [outlying farmland in both villages], the sale of the Washingborough Schoolhouse in Manor Road and latterly the income from the sale of the old Washingborough Village Hall in Manor Road, which has all been invested. The New Trust Deed merged the George Walker funds into just one unit and expanded its scope of grant aid to include voluntary groups within each village albeit that the main function is for youngsters between the ages of 16 – 25 for further education at universities, apprenticeships etc. The group eligibility covers the ages of 5 – 25 years for equipment, instruction days or coaching. Grants are considered once a year, usually in October of each year. THESE GRANTS ARE NOT MEANS TESTED AND APPLICANTS CAN ONLY APPLY ONCE FOR THE MAIN OR SPORTS SECTIONS.
The Main Charity continues to be well supported each year and grants are awarded to students between the ages of 16 – 25 years towards university, college, apprenticeships or vocational courses. [PLEASE NOTE GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING THE 6TH FORM OF SCHOOLS.] The Trustees contact the local secondary schools, Lincoln University, Lincoln College and Siemens each year with copies of the application forms informing them of the available grants plus adverts in the Sheepwash Times and details on village websites and posters around the villages. The applications are considered by the Trustees around late October/beginning of November each year when they are more aware of what interest the Charity will have to award grants as they can only use the interest plus this gives the applicants time to ensure they have been accepted on their courses or apprenticeships etc.
The George Walker is a sports related section for youngsters again between the ages of 16 – 25 who may have been selected to play for their County in any sport or to gain a qualification in any sport for coaching or requiring specialist equipment to carry out the former two items.
With the income from the latter sale of Washingborough Village Hall the Trustees wished to expand the scope of eligibility of grants so under the New Trust Deed a new section was introduced to enable voluntary runs groups in each village to apply for grants towards, equipment, courses or any educational tuition. The Group must be resident in Heighington or Washingborough and to cover 5 – 25 years.
